RED ARMY UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT II

                        PILOTKA (Service/Side Cap)

This cap was issued to other ranks, NCO's and officers alike though earlier officers versions were of better quality and had piping. It could be worn with the enameled red star, subdued type or with no star at all.

                        STALUI SHLEM

Obr40 Steel Helmet - This pattern steel helmet saw service throughout the Great Patriotic War and into post war. It was lined with three canvas pads filled with wadding and allowed the Pilotka to be worn underneath.

                        SHAPKA USHANKA

The 'fish' fur hat was issued to troops in the winter and was usually worn with the side flaps tied up as shown but could be worn down to keep the ears warm. The hat was worn in combat but could be worn under the steel helmet.
The officers version was made of a better quality.
                    OFFICER & NCO'S FURAZHKA

The Peaked caps were worn by Officers and NCO's. Worn usually behind the lines but it was not uncommon for Officers to wear their Furazhka in the front line. Cap A is the field version with a cloth peak and subdued cap band, a subdued cap star could be worn. Cap B also has the square peak but is black like the cap band. The magenta cap band and piping is for Rifles/Infantry.
